As part of a proposal to widen the roads
A digital survey of 25 arterial roads identified for widening by the Chennai Corporation as part of the measures to decongest traffic will be launched shortly.
The civic body recently invited bids from consultancies desirous of carrying out the survey. The survey was being undertaken based on the recommendation of the Second Master Plan of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
The roads to be widened include TTK Road, Gandhi Mandapam Road, Velachery Main Road, Medavakkam Tank Road, Madhavaram High Road, Kaliamman Koil Street at Koyambedu, Valluvarkottam High Road, Venkatnarayana Road and Tirumalai Pillai Road in T.Nagar, Purasawalkam High Road, Kilpauk Garden Road, Paper Mills Road, and Suryanarayana Road in Royapuram.
The proposed width specified for each road varies from 18 metres to 30.5 metres. The consultant has to provide details, including the land to be acquired or encroachments that need to be removed. The proposed road width would include provisions for stormwater drain and footpath, the officials said.
The Second Master Plan had also suggested that land could be acquired on the basis of transfer of development rights.
It has listed out nearly 120 arterial roads for the purpose. The civic agency proposes to take up road widening project in a phased manner.
The survey would be taken using a total station instrument, which helps in measuring distance from a particular point.
The consultant would be able to provide a drawing of the surveyed area using the data, the officials said. The digital survey is expected to be completed in six months.
