When the iPhone 6S first released in the United States, Damini Jayaraman knew that she had to have it before the rest of the nation did. So, she got her cousin to buy the rose-gold 64GB phone and send it to her as soon as possible.

When this iPhone hit India at the stroke of midnight on Thursday, she had already used the phone for over two weeks. “Every time there is a new Apple product, I try and make sure that I buy it as soon as possible. Most of the time, I get people to pre-order it in the U.S. and have it sent here,” she said.

Apple fans in the city queued up outside the various Apple outlets on Thursday night to either collect their pre-ordered phones or buy their own. The biggest celebrations in the city were at Phoenix mall, where customers were treated to a dinner, a movie and other entertainment as they waited for the launch at midnight. “We sold around 400 handsets on the first day at the outlet,” a spokesperson for Phoenix said.

While there was a handful of people who had already got their phones before the launch, there were others who have been patiently waiting for the phone.

“I just got my phone today, and I can’t wait to explore the 3D Touch feature,” Karthik Balaji, a techie, said. Pradeep Rajadas, president of sociall.in, said the launch has come at the right time for India.

Speaking of the phone, he said the 3D touch feature was bound to be a game changer, inspiring many to develop apps for the feature.
