Doctors and paramedic staff of the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) will undergo a training programme to manage and prevent diabetes.
The ESIC has tied up with Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospitals for the programme.
Around 200 doctors and 100 paramedics from ESI hospitals and dispensaries in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli will undergo the training.
While the doctors will be provided three-day training, paramedics will participate in a day-long workshop.
Faculty from India Diabetes Research Foundation, which is also funding the programme, will train the candidates. Its chairman, A. Ramachandran, said the programme was a pilot project based on a study conducted earlier in the country. Tamil Nadu and New Delhi were chosen for the project.
The Foundation has in the past seven years trained around 4,000 doctors and 6,000 paramedics across 17 states.
Around 1,000 school teachers in the State were also educated on the risk of diabetes last year.
