Detainee commits self-immolation in Chennai

A suspect arrested by Kanathur police on Sunday allegedly committed suicide by resorting to self-immolation on the station premises early on Monday.

Police sources said the deceased Humayun (36), a carpenter and a resident of Panaiyur was arrested by Kanathur police following a complaint lodged by one Geetha of Panaiyur. Humayun and his collegue Shaukat had gone to work in Geetha's house a few days ago and is reported to have stolen 4 gms of gold from the house.

Police arrested Humayun and he was to be remanded on Monday. Meanwhile, around 12.30 a.m. he poured a can of kerosene kept in the station, ran out of the station and set himself ablaze. He was taken to a private hospital and later shifted to the Government Kilpauk hospital. Humayun died around 7.30 am on Monday, sources added.

A judicial enquiry is ordered into the death.
