Desilting operations to begin early

The Chennai Corporation has advanced commencement of the desilting of stormwater drains to April this year to cope with mosquito menace. The civic body has also started desilting work on major waterways of the PWD to control mosquito density. Major waterways such as Adyar, Cooum and Buckingham Canal are maintained by the PWD. As many as 31 canals such as Mambalam Canal are maintained by the Chennai Corporation.

Desilting of the entire network will be completed in two months and illegal sewer connections in the stormwater drains will be plugged, said a senior official of Chennai Corporation. The Chennai Corporation usually completes work on desilting of stormwater drains before the third week of September.

There has been a pressing need for more malaria desilting workers in the some of the added areas.
