Several long distance trains from Chennai Central railway station were delayed as a loco coach got derailed between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi on Thursday morning.

A senior official of Southern Railway said the derailment that happened at 7.50 a.m. resulted in several long distance trains being held up at various stations and outbound trains getting stranded at the Chennai Central station.

The derailment was rectified at 9.30 a.m.

A total of 14 trains coming towards Chennai were detained at various stations including Avadi, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Kadambattur, Minjur and Sholingur, causing inconvenience to hundreds of commuters.

Similarly, four trains supposed to proceed from Chennai Central were detained.

Long distance trains reached Chennai Central after a delay of about two hours.

Though the maintenance workers of the Southern Railway rectified the derailment within a few hours in the morning, long distance trains could not be operated on time during the entire day because of implementation of ‘caution driving’ or slow driving in the stretch between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi.
