In separate incidents, three men committed suicide on Monday.
In Ayanavaram, a retired sub-inspector of the Railway Protection Force hanged himself at his house on Third Street of Pudhu Nagar, after months of depression over his son’s ill health.
The police said M. Loganathan (62), was depressed since his retirement two years ago, as his son, L. Sridhar (29), had been mentally unstable after he met with a road accident. “Loganathan was worried over the future of his son as his three daughters were married and well settled,” said a police officer.
Loganathan had started drinking during the past few months. On Sunday, he returned home after consuming alcohol. On Monday morning, when his wife knocked on his room door repeatedly, there was no response. Along with neighbours, she broke the door open and found Loganthan hanging from a fan. He was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared he was brought dead. A case under section 174 of the IPC was registered by the Ayanavaram police.
In the second incident, a 65-year-old man hanged himself at his son’s house on 16th block of Basin Bridge in north Chennai on Monday after suffering from depression as he was unable to earn a living and was dependent on his sons.
The police said P. Kuppan (65) was living with his first son, Ravi, a cab driver, in Basin Bridge for the past three months. After leaving his job as a watchman in a private company in the neighbourhood due to old age and illness, Kuppan had been living with both his sons.
“Depending on his sons’ income, and his neighbours and children talking about it made him more depressed. His inability to find a new job made it worse,” said a police officer.
On Monday, around 4.30 a.m., Kuppan went to the bathroom but as he did not return to his bed, his son, Ravi, looked and found him hanging by a nylon rope. The body was taken to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered by the Basin Bridge police.
