The delay in completing the subway behind Government Stanley Hospital is causing hardships to the hospital authorities.
The subway was aimed at helping people of the locality.
However, with the pace of work slowing down considerably, patients, visitors and the staff are put to hardship with the congestion on Monegar Choultry Road.
Due to the construction of the subway, vehicles are often parked haphazardly outside the premises, adding to the confusion.
In addition to the slow progress of work on the subway, the hospital is also facing other challenges.
Great risk
Doctors said that the residents of the slum across the road, who visit the relative being treated at the hospital, tend to misuse the hospital's premises to avoid the difficultly of crossing the road.
According to the doctors, while children play on the grounds in the evening, at night many residents sleep on the premises itself.
When hospital authorities prevent the slum-dwellers from using the hospital premises they are met with insolence, they said.
Several cases of theft have been reported in the last few months, says a senior doctor at the Surgical Gastroenterology department.
“There has been theft of even copper wires. Some of the expensive items that have been stolen are being sold as scrap,” he said. Recently the department had to contend with loss of pipes used for air conditioner units also.
