The death toll in the fire accident at a cracker factory in Vayyaavoor near here on Tuesday afternoon rose to four, with two more persons succumbing to their injuries on Wednesday.
According to the police, nine workers of the fireworks manufacturing unit — Thanigaimalai, Manonmani, Venkatesan, Manimozhi, Sankar, Manimegalai, Saraswathi, Sujatha and Kala — sustained burns in the fire that broke out around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
They were rushed to District Government Headquarters Hospital, Kancheepuram, from where Manimozhi was shifted to Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital and the others to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMC).
While Thanigaimalai and Manonmani died at KMC on Tuesday, Manimozhi passed away at the Chengalpattu hospital and Venkatesan at KMC on Wednesday.
The Kancheepuram taluk police have registered a case holding the unit owner, C. Senthilnathan of Kancheepuram, as the prime accused. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Meanwhile, the district administration has constituted a committee, headed by revenue divisional officer, Kancheepuram, D. Chandran, to conduct an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
