Parents and relatives of a class XI student, who is said to have immolated herself using kerosene on Wednesday, staged a protest in front of a private school in New Washermenpet on Thursday evening demanding police action against the school headmistress and a teacher said to be responsible for the girl’s death.

On Wednesday evening, neighbours spotted smoke emanating from the girl’s house in Cherian Nagar, New Washermenpet, and it was suspected that she was electrocuted while she was operating a washing machine. The body was sent to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem.

The police later said she had committed suicide by immolating herself.

According to the police, around 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, the parents of the deceased girl, along with relatives, gheraoed in front of the school demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. Immediately, a team of policemen from New Washermenpet reached the spot and pacified the agitators. A case under section 174 of CrPC has been filed.

Help for those with suicidal tendencies is available on the following Sneha helplines: 24640050/24640060.
