About 70 students of D.D. Medical College in Tiruvallur district began an indefinite fast on their college campus on Tuesday.
The students, who are in a limbo after the Medical Council of India (MCI) cancelled their college’s recognition, want the government to help them continue their course. The students belong to the 2011-2012 batch of the college.
“We are on an indefinite hunger strike. We appeal to the government to take over the college so we can continue our studies and write examinations,” said one of the students. Some parents too joined the protest. More students of the batch are expected to join in on Wednesday.
“Some of us paid more than Rs. 25 lakh towards capitation fee apart from the annual fees of Rs. 8 lakh for two years. We were also made to pay the second-year fees,” another student said.
The students said the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University had issued hall tickets to them, conducted examinations and also published their results on its website. However, the students were not allowed to take the supplementary exams.
A parent said the government should come to the aid of the students and initiate measures to take over the college and obtain MCI approval for it.
