The cool, pleasant weather seems to have come to an end in the city with the maximum temperature rising three to four degree Celsius above the average temperature since Tuesday.
The maximum temperature on Tuesday in Nungambakkam — 34 degree Celsius — was the highest so far this month. It was four degree Celsius above the average. In Meenambakkam, it was 35 degree Celsius against the average of 31 degree Celsius.
On Wednesday, the temperature in Nungambakkam was 33 degree Celsius and in Meenambakkam 34.4 degree Celsius.
S.R. Ramanan, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, said the clear sky condition led to more radiation. Rapid urbanisation over the past few years has also contributed to such weather condition.
“The city will experience torrid weather only from April-end as westerly wind will prevail,” he said. Last year, the maximum temperature rose to 34.9 degree Celsius on February 27. The city recorded its all-time high temperature on February 23, 2007, when the temperature touched 35.7 degree Celsius, Mr. Ramanan said.
Chennai has received only 7 mm of rain against its average of 37 mm so far this year. Meteorological Department forecasts that maximum temperature would be around 34 degree Celsius till Friday.
