A day after he hacked to death K. Suresh, a 27-year-old physically challenged man, M. Gopi (29) succumbed to injuries at Government Stanley Hospital on Thursday. Five persons were arrested in connection with the scuffle that led to the deaths of the men.

Police said that Gopi, a daily wage labourer, died around 5 p.m. on Thursday. He had sustained serious injuries on his head, hands and legs. Two groups had clashed in front of his house on the Pump House Street in J.J. Nagar in Korrukupet on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, five men — K. Mariappan (23), L. Suresh (32), S. Arumugam (29), S. Rajesh Kumar (34) and Ajay Kumar (31) — were arrested in connection with the incident. While the first three, friends of Suresh, were involved in the attack on Gopi, the other two men were involved in Suresh’s death. On Wednesday night, Suresh, a polio patient, who was formerly Gopi’s neighbour, had come to his relative's house at J.J. Nagar to attend a function. Sometime later, Suresh and Gopi got into an argument and a scuffle ensued. Gopi’s mother, Sivagangai, and aunt Inbakanni, were also injured and admitted to the hospital.
