The city police on Sunday claimed that the suspected rapist-killer of the seven-year-old girl in Mugalivakkam in February, confessed to having murdered his mother on December 2 to take her gold jewellery for his expenses. Police also claimed that he was planning to kill his father as he had refused to give him money.

After coming out on bail in the case of rape and murder of Mugalivakkam girl, Daswant was living with his parents, Sekar and Sarala, in Kundrathur. Police said he used to pester his parents for money to meet his expenses on drinking, betting and racing.

On December 2, Mr. Sekar went out for work and Sarala was found murdered in the house. Her ‘thaali’ and a pair of bangles were missing. Daswant also went missing.

Daswant’s jail mates David and Rajesh, who were earlier detained under the Goondas Act, had helped him flee to Bengaluru. From there, he proceeded to Mumbai where he was nabbed last week. There he gave the police the slip, but was arrested again and brought here by air on Saturday night amidst tight security.

Involved in betting

On Saturday, the investigators, under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Sarvesh Raj, grilled him for hours. During interrogation, he admitted to having killed his mother by using an iron hammer, police sources said. He told the police that his parents had sold a property to secure bail for him in the rape and murder case. But ever since he came out, his parents scolded him as he was into betting in Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune. He used to demand ₹2,000 every day, but they refused to give him the money, Daswant told the interrogators.

Police say that his original plan was to murder both his parents, but since his father had left for work, he changed his plan. On the day of the murder, he demanded money from his mother, but she asked him to find a job. Angered, he hit her with an iron hammer. Even as she was lying in a pool of blood, he watched TV. It is only after some time he realised that his mother was dead, said an investigating officer.

He removed the jewellery she was wearing, took ₹20,000 in cash and fled. With help of jail mates, he fled to Mumbai via Bengaluru but another ex-prison mate informed the police where he was heading, sources said.

On Saturday night, the police brought him to the crime scene and he gave an account of the sequence of events. His statement was recorded and videographed. The interrogation concluded on Sunday. Daswant was produced before Judicial Magistrate-I in Chengalpet and remanded in judicial custody. He was sent to Puzhal prison.
