Residents of added areas have appealed to the Corporation Council to end the illegal tapping of groundwater. A group of residents of Manali zone on Friday met the Mayor Saidai.S. Duraisamy and requested him to take efforts to prevent commercial operations of drinking water bottling plants in their neighbourhood.
“ The commercial exploitation of ground water for supplying drinking water to the city has affected our drinking water,” said a resident. Apart from the bottling plants, private tankers too have started tapping groundwater from such areas, they added. With Chennai Metrowater catering to domestic and industrial needs, the private tankers draw water from borewells in added areas such as Medavakkam, Ambattur and Madhavaram. Proper licensing for tapping ground water from the licensed borewells may prevent indiscriminate extraction, a resident claimed.
The condition has worsened in the past few months, he added. As of now, there is no proper enforcement mechanism to check exploitation of groundwater. Though the Tamil Nadu Groundwater (Development and Management) Act was conceived several years ago, there is no monitoring agency for sinking of borewells. “We have approached the Corporation to stop such illegal trade using their powers under the CCMC Act,” the resident said.
