Threat letters to Jayalalithaa

Two letters threatening attack on AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa were received at Jaya TV office and her Poes Garden residence on Friday. Police said, the letters posted from Madurai, issued a bomb threat to the leader if she took part in a political meeting cum rally in Madurai scheduled for October. AIADMK party functionaries approached the office of the Director-General of Police here on Saturday in this regard, sources said.

Five held for murder

Five persons, including a woman, were arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder of a man at Basin Bridge on Monday. Police sources said the accused, Murugammal (60) of Basin Bridge, and her gang assaulted Ramani, sister of Sakthivel of Kannikapuram, following a business rivalry a few months ago. She was recently released. She came to know that Sakthivel was planning to take revenge.

She fled to Pallavaram where she was contacted by Madhavan (40), a cable TV operator who claimed that Sakthivel was demanding a share in his business and was threatening him, police said.

Murugammal and Madhavan hatched a plan and murdered Sakthivel at Basin Bridge on Monday morning. Murugammal was arrested and she led the police team to Madhavan and his accomplices Kannan (30), Siva (22) and Ibrahim (20), sources added.

Announcing this at a press meet on Saturday, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) S. N. Seshasai warned of strict action against anti-social elements in possession of lethal weapons. He also authorised police personnel on night rounds in north Chennai to carry pistols. This comes in the wake of an attack on a Special Sub Inspector at Tondiarpet on Thursday night.

Cash stolen

Unidentified persons reportedly stole Rs.13 lakh kept inside the box of a scooter in Flower Bazaar on Friday evening. Police sources said Dinesh Chand (27) of G.A. Road, Old Washermenpet was taking the money to give it to another person . On the way, he witnessed a temple procession and went to take a closer look after parking his scooter. He returned shortly to find the box of his scooter broken and the cash missing.

Houses burgled

Burglars struck at a house in VOC Nagar on Friday afternoon and decamped with gold jewellery and cash.

According to police sources, Jayanthi (45), the owner of the house, returned in the evening to find the lock of her front door broken. In another case in Selva Mudali Street, Otteri, the house of Abdullah and Seema was targeted by burglars on Friday night after the couple had gone to a hospital in Poonamallee. Two houses on SA Colony in Vysarpadi were also burgled on early Saturday and the culprits fled with gold jewellery, cash and silk saris, sources added.
