Drowns while swimming
A 25-year-old man drowned while swimming at the Marina Beach here on Tuesday.
According to police sources, Mohan (25) of Tiruverkadu, who holds a master's degree in Commerce, went to the employment exchange office in Santhome.
Later, he went to the beach with his friends for a swim. A little later, Mohan could not be found. Local fishermen and police personnel launched a search to locate him. His body was washed ashore a few hours later.
In another case, J. Vivek (18) of Red Hills is feared drowned in the sea near the Marina Beach. Police said the teenager was swimming with his friends around noon on Tuesday when he was trapped in a rough tide. Coast Guard, police and fishermen were trying to locate him.
Body found
The body of an unidentified middle-aged woman was found on the Anna Memorial premises at the Marina Beach here on Tuesday. Police said no external injuries were seen on the body that was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Woman conned
An unidentified man allegedly cheated a woman and relieved her of a three-sovereign chain in Aminjikarai on Tuesday. According to police, Unnamalai (61) of Gingee had come to the city to see her daughter residing in the T.P. Chathram area. In a bus from the Koyambedu bus stand to Kilpauk, a man picked a conversation with the woman and promised to help her get old age pension.
He took the woman to a photo studio in Aminjikarai and asked her to get photographed after removing her gold chain as the scheme was meant for poor people. Since he offered to keep the jewellery and wait for her, Unnamalai went inside the studio. When she came out a little later, the suspect was missing.
Four detained
Four persons were detained by the Shastri Nagar police on charges of trying to steal sandalwood trees in Adyar on Tuesday.
A special team investigating complaints that part of sandalwood trees were often cut and stolen detained Selvam (34), Ayyathurai (22), Perumal (28) and Kandasamy (38) of Athur in Salem district who were found moving in a suspicious manner in the area.
Held for flesh trade racket
: Personnel of the Central Crime Branch of Chennai Suburban Police on Tuesday arrested a 32-year-old man hailing from Andhra Pradesh for running a flesh trade racket in the city and its suburbs.
A CCB team picked up Niranjan Kumar of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and a woman accomplice in Poondi Bazaar, East Tambaram. According to police officials, he was arrested on several occasions in the past and was detained under the Goondas Act on two occasions. He was involved in 12 cases and was wanted by the State police, including the CB-CID and was on the run since 2003.
Four cellphones, two cars and motorcycles, Rs.8 lakh in cash and a laptop were seized from him, police added.
