For the next three weeks or so, television screens are going to come alive at night with cricket.

Most homes in the country are going to be tuned into Champions League T20, the perfect show for the season, with its short format, nail-biting finishes, all those colourful clothes, the music and the cheering, and the huge fan following.

Twelve teams will clash in two groups, beginning Saturday night. North meets South in the first qualifier match — Northern Knights vs. Southern Express in the first of a long series that concludes with the final on October 4.

The show began at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and the fun has just started. Given that all the matches may not be followed that closely on the field, it might still be a fun thing to do at home, especially if the matches are intensely fought.

Chennai might be disappointed that there is going to be no match played at Chepauk, but at least Chennai Super Kings is a top contender in the game that’s clearly more than cricket. Here’s to cricket and more then, until the last ball is bowled.
