A crane owner, Saravanan (53) of Vazhai Thottam, Anna Salai, Chennai, died in a freak accident on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway near Sriperumpudur on Monday.

According to police, the mishap took place around noon. The crane had earlier developed a snag, and had been halted by its driver on Sunday near the NH toll plaza. The driver then informed Saravanan about the snag, over the phone.

On Monday morning, Saravanan arrived, and engaged a crane mechanic from Sriperumpudur to rectify the defect in the crane.

Once it was repaired, Saravanan got into the vehicle to move it. But the crane’s arm came into contact with a high voltage overhead power supply wire, and Saravanan was electrocuted.

Sriperumpudur police have registered a case and are investigating.
