The city police, during the enumeration exercise of ‘rowdy’ elements and property offenders, has stumbled upon cases that have not reached their logical conclusion because of the accused evading an appearance in court.
The police have studied cases which are pending simply because those chargesheeted have not appeared in court despite a summons being issued. Sources said they intend to revive these incomplete cases.
A senior police officer said the follow-up of chargesheeted persons is bound to put a check on those criminals who have been evading court summons as police personnel would aid efforts to put them on the dock.
V. Balakrishnan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mylapore, said a case could be finally closed only after the court pronounces a verdict.
In spite of the police officials carrying out investigation, several cases do not see the light of the day as the accused fail to appear in court.
Three types of evasion
A senior officer said, “During the study of these delayed cases, we found out there were three types of evasion — the accused avoid receiving the summons issued by the court; in cases involving a group, the absence of one or two accused means the case cannot be taken up; in extreme instances, the case remains in cold storage because the accused has ‘absconded’. This is despite the court issuing a Non Bailable Warrant (NBW),” he added.
