CPI(M) demands probe into adulterated paddy

April 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - CHENNAI:

CPI(M) whip K. Balakrishnan on Friday wrote to Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam demanding an inquiry into procurement of adulterated paddy kept at Kappalur SIPCOT and the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godowns at Asthikanpatti in Madurai.

Mr. Balakrishnan said that he and party MLA R. Annadurai visited the godowns on April 6 and were shocked to find the paddy adulterated with sand, powdered brick and other waste materials.

“Officials said the paddy was procured a fortnight ago. Some bags contained only husk and unbaked bricks,” he said.

Mr. Balakrishnan said when paddy was procured from farmers they were in good condition and without any dust and other waste. “But after procurement some people have added sand and other things. This has caused a huge loss to the State government,” he said.

Demanding stringent action against those who were behind the irregularities, he also wanted inspection of TUCS godowns to verify the quality of paddy.
