Nearly 8 suburban trains were affected between Perambur and Vyasarpadi after a cow was run over by a train on Tuesday evening.

According to a Southern Railway official, around 4 p.m., the guard of a suburban train plying between Pattabiram and Madras Moore Market Complex informed railway officials about the incident.

The railway staff visited the spot and removed the carcass. The accident led to suburban trains from Tiruvallur, Avadi, Pattabiram and Tirutani headed towards Chennai being held up for over one and half hours. Services resumed only by 6 p.m.

“I was coming from Tiruvallur to meet my friend at Chennai Central railway station around 5.30 p.m. However, my train was held up between Perambur and Vyasarpadi. Finally, I reached the station around 6.20 p.m,” said V. Kumaresan, a college student.

According to police sources, many passengers got down on the tracks and walked towards their destination.

“The train was held up for nearly two hours. Many people got down and walked on the tracks and walked towards Vyasarpadi railway station and took other modes of transport from there,” said K. Iniyan, who works in a private company. Some passengers, however, walked towards Perambur or Vyasarpadi railway stations and waited for the next train to come.
