A cow fell into an uncovered pit on Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street in Triplicane on Saturday morning. The pit that was over 2.5 feet deep had been dug on Friday night as part of the ongoing cement concrete road laying works by Chennai Corporation. “The pit was hip-deep and since the cow could not come out on its own, it was lifted out by residents. But it was bleeding and in a critical condition,” said a local shopkeeper. The incident took place around 11 a.m.. “We tried calling various animal welfare agencies but no one helped. Finally, the owner took it away on a tricycle,” shopkeepers said. Later residents placed cardboard sheets over the pit.

Civic body staff said they will ensure that they properly cordon off pits dug up for civic works.
