The Madras High Court on Tuesday declined to entertain a petition seeking a direction to the Union Home Ministry to stop the installation of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse at Meerut.

The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh, passed the order on a petition by R. Kannan Govindarajulu of Kilmaruvathur village in Kancheepuram district.

The Bench observed that nothing had given rise to a cause of action within the territorial jurisdiction of the Madras High Court.

If the petitioner was so concerned about the developments in Meerut, he was free to exercise his rights before the Allahabad High Court, the court said.
