Without revealing that power of attorney had been cancelled, suspects made sale to US-based engineer

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) wing of the Chennai police arrested a couple on Monday for allegedly selling a 1,120-square feet house to an US-based engineer using fake documents.

According to the police, the suspects, Balaji and his wife Kanchana, run a construction company in Pammal. Vidya Murali, a resident of the locality who works in the US as an engineer, was in Chennai and wanted to buy property.

She and her father approached Balaji and Kanchana. The couple sold them an apartment in Sambandham Nagar in Pammal for Rs. 49 lakh. “The property actually belongs to Srinivasan, Balaji’s father. He had given the power of attorney to Kanchana in 2010. But due to a family dispute, he cancelled it in 2012,” said a police officer.

Without revealing the fact that the power of attorney had been cancelled, the couple completed the sale. After he came to know about the sale, Srinivasan approached Murali and quarrelled with him.

Murali, who questioned Balaji, lodged a police complaint on July 13 after he failed to get proper responses. Following an investigation, CCB officers arrested the couple and remanded them to custody.
