The torrential rain continued to take a toll on lives in the city on Sunday with three people getting killed in rain-related accidents.

While a couple died when an overhead power supply line snapped and fell on them in Velachery, a youth died after a portion of a building wall collapsed and fell on his house in Pattalam.

Karunanidhi and Sudha of Ashtalakshmi Nagar in Velachery were returning home on their motorcycle with their two daughters when the overhead cable snapped. While the couple died on the spot, their daughters escaped miraculously.

Angry residents gathered on Velachery Bypass and staged a protest, bringing traffic to a halt.

At Pattalam, Raj was sleeping in his house on Parasuraman Street, when the wall of the adjacent building collapsed. He was killed instantly, policemen said. His mother Lakshmi escaped with minor injuries.

Chandra, living in one of the houses, said she woke up to a loud noise and found the pathway to the house blocked by debris. She said Raj’s house was in the backyard, but he had come to sleep in the front portion. He lived with his mother and worked as a telecom operator for an online property firm in Guindy. On information, firemen rushed to the spot and rescued several people from the building.

Radhabai, 64, who suffered a minor head injury, was taken to Government Kilpauk Hospital.
