The two had frequent quarrels over Nagaraj’s conversations with his colleagues

A couple committed suicide at their home in Chromepet on Sunday night. Chitlapakkam police, who are investigating, said Nagaraj (28), an employee of a private company, was living with his wife Sasikala (24), alias Anitha and their 4-year-old son Dinesh in Gangai Amman Koil Street in Chromepet. Nagaraj was working as a supervisor in a company where the majority of staff was women. He used to spend a considerable amount of time on his cell phone passing instructions to his women colleagues, which was not liked by his wife.

The couple is reported to have had frequent quarrels over the issue.

On Sunday night, the couple had fought again. Sasikala threatened to commit suicide by immolation and poured kerosene on herself. Nagaraj grabbed the can of kerosene, emptied it on himself and set himself on fire.

Sasikala tried to rescue him, only to be engulfed by the flames as she was already soaked in kerosene. The couple’s neighbours rushed to their house and put out . Their child Dinesh was safe as he was playing elsewhere.

Nagaraj and Sasikala were rushed to the Burns Ward of Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where they died on Monday morning. Chitlapakkam police are investigating.
