The victim, Vijaya of Pallikaranai, was lured by the couple to Saidapet where they attacked her with a hammer and left her to die.

Police on Friday arrested a couple in connection with the murder of a 50-year-old woman who was found dead in Saidapet on Thursday. According to police, they killed her as the victim had repeatedly asked them to return the Rs. 50,000 the couple had borrowed from her.

The victim, Vijaya of Pallikaranai, was lured by the couple to Saidapet where they attacked her with a hammer and left her to die.

Vijaya, a moneylender, had loaned money to the couple, Ravi (45) and Pushpa (30) of Kannagi Nagar, Thoraipakkam a few months ago. Over the last week or so, Vijaya had repeatedly asked the couple to return the money, but they had not been able to do so. Since the couple could not return the money, they decided to kill her, police said.

“Vijaya met the couple in Saidapet on Wednesday night and asked for the money. Ravi and Pushpa promised to return it and took her to the campus of the Institute of Advanced Study in Education in Saidapet. The couple then attacked her with a hammer, took away her jewellery and left her to die in a bush,” said Balakrishna Prabu, inspector, Saidapet.

While on the campus with the couple, Vijaya had received a call on her mobile phone from her daughter Kamila, and had told her that she was with the couple. This proved a crucial clue in tracking the suspects, the officer added.

Ravi and Pushpa were arrested on Friday morning. Six sovereigns of the victim’s jewellery and the hammer used in the murder were seized.
