The Kancheepuram Municipal Council meeting on Friday witnessed pandemonium after DMK and AIADMK councillors locked horns over alleged partiality.
When the council meeting began around 10.30 a.m., the DMK councillor L. Abusali alleged that resolutions moved by the opposition party councillors were not being entertained. “While the chairman says the resolution had been forwarded to the office for inclusion in the agenda, the officials redirect the DMK councillors to approach the chairman to get their resolutions included in the agenda,” he claimed. Two other DMK councillors, M. Udhayakumar and V. Jagannathan also endorsed the statement of Mr. Abusali.
Meanwhile, a senior AIADMK councillor N. Manoharan came to the rescue of the chairman by pointing out that around a dozen resolutions moved by the DMK councillors had been included in the day’s agenda.
Irked by Mr. Manoharan’s response, Mr. Jagannathan said Mr. Manoharan had no authority to make a reply to the questions posed by the councillors to the chairman. However, the AIADMK councillors shouted him down, stating that Mr. Manoharan as a senior AIADMK councillor had the right to defend the chairman.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mythili Thirunavukkarasu wound up the proceedings by declaring that all the resolutions listed in the meeting agenda had been unanimously passed.
Subsequently, the DMDK councillor J. Shanmugasundaram led a road roko in front of the municipal office, protesting dictatorial functioning on part of the chairman and official apathy shown towards the wards represented by opposition party councillors.
Later in the evening, Ms. Mythili released the list of works executed, to the tune of Rs. 1 crore, in various wards represented by the DMK and DMDK councillors.
“I am at a loss to note why the opposition party councillors levelled such an allegation at the council meeting and the DMDK member resorted to road roko,” she added.
