A councillor of Tambaram municipality, who was injured in an accident in Selaiyur on Tuesday, died in hospital on Wednesday.

He was knocked down by a drunk policeman on Agaram Main Road and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

According to the traffic police, the accident took place when Ashok Kumar, councillor of ward 7, was going on his motorcycle to pick his son up from school in Selaiyur. On Agaram Main Road, policeman Ramachandran (32), also riding a two-wheeler, rammed Kumar’s motorcycle, throwing him on the road.

A profusely bleeding Kumar was taken to a private hospital in Chromepet and later referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries on Wednesday morning.

Ramachandran too sustained injuries in the accident and was arrested later. He is attached to the Shankar Nagar police station.

Ramachandran, who was on leave, had been drinking from morning on Tuesday, and then rode his two-wheeler in an inebriated condition, the police said.
