After completing patch work on 6,109 potholes, the Chennai Corporation has intensified efforts to prevent further damage to roads by service agencies.
The civic body, on Saturday, suspended the engineer of a ward in Anna Nagar for his failure to prevent an illegal road cut by a service provider. A portion of Kilpauk Garden Road-Taylors Road junction was found to be damaged on Saturday.
On investigation, the service provider was found to have dug the road without permission from the Chennai Corporation.
Road cuts have been banned during the north east monsoon by the Chennai Corporation. The civic body is planning to initiate action against the executive engineer-in-charge and assistant executive engineer of the zone for dereliction of duty.
The patch work on all of major bus routes has been completed. Work on interior roads in the city is also underway. As many as 1,204 roads have been repaired till Friday. The number of potholes repaired in the city crossed 6,000 on Friday.
The largest number of potholes was repaired in Ambattur zone, with 2,500 patches on 322 roads.
The total area repaired in the zone through patch work is 58,045 square metres. Most of the roads in the zone have been in a state of ruin as black-topping has not been done even in those areas where work on underground drainage network and drinking water supply network has been completed.
Royapuram has been the zone with the second largest number of damaged roads. As many as 615 potholes in 74 roads have been repaired by the Chennai Corporation till Friday. Anna Nagar and Madhavaram are some of the other severely damaged zones that have been repaired after the rains.
