Two years after planning to use part-time workers for conservancy, the Chennai Corporation on Tuesday instructed officials to identify zones suitable for carrying out conservancy operations using such workers.
The decision to use the workers comes in the wake of rising protests by private conservancy workers, allegations pertaining to conservancy operations and reports of swindling of money by councillors. Each person who will work part-time is expected to get Rs.37.50 per hour of sweeping work.
Corporation officials claimed that a large number of educated unemployed youth have expressed willingness to sweep roads on a part-time basis for a wage as a mark of social commitment.
The civic body is likely to invite applications from unemployed youth and self-help groups to create a database of personnel for conservancy operations. The Corporation will also offer protective gear for the youth who sweep the roads.
