The Chennai Corporation will start a survey of all unauthorised constructions, including multi-storied buildings, next week.
Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan on Saturday instructed all the officials of the ten zones to submit the report of the survey next week.
“We will take action against the unauthorised constructions after the survey. Action will be taken against the officials who withhold data pertaining to unauthorised constructions,” said Mr. Karthikeyan.
The Monitoring Committee constituted by the High Court has asked the Corporation and other local bodies to submit a report on the action taken against the buildings for which demolition notices have been issued. The civic body will submit the plan of action against the unauthorised constructions before the next monitoring committee meeting scheduled next month.
According to officials of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the civic body is empowered to take enforcement action against unauthorised constructions according to the provisions of the Town and Country Planning (T & CP) Act and the CCMC Act.
The CMDA is enforcing the T & CP Act and the Corporation is enforcing the CCMC Act governed by building rules.
As the sanctioning processes have been decentralised to the respective zones of the Corporation, the collection of data pertaining to unauthorised constructions is being done at the zonal level by the civic body.
Following the suggestion of the High Court that less stringent measures be taken against residential buildings and action on high-rise commercial buildings be prioritised, the civic body is likely to focus on commercial buildings, said an official of the Corporation.
