Chennai Corporation has planned to demarcate three new 100-acre sites on the outskirts for the city's solid waste management. The district administrations of the adjoining districts, including Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, have kicked off their search for the right spot for pieces of land suitable for solid waste management based on instructions from the government.
The site for the new solid waste management facilities to be commissioned will be identified in any area beyond the northern, western and southern suburbs without affecting the residential nature of any neighbourhood in the Chennai Metropolitan Area.
The civic body now generates over 4,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste on a daily basis and has 10 dumping sites across the 426-sq km area. Most of these pieces of land, except Perungudi and Kodungaiyur where the civic body dumps most of its garbage, are inadequate for dumping garbage.
Residents of localities adjacent to the existing dump yards of Perungudi and Kodungaiyur have been severely affected by the burning of garbage. The consistent deterioration of the ecologically fragile Pallikaranai marshland, where the Perungudi dumpyard is located, has emerged as another challenge.
As a result, the Chennai Corporation started seeking the right technology a few months ago for remediation and scientific closure of these two dump yards.
After suitable technology is identified by the civic body, the 100-acre pieces of lands would be used for innovative solid waste management initiatives.
