The Chennai Corporation is planning to hire at least 20 more tipper lorries and 12 haulage tipper trucks as part of its efforts to tackle possible emergencies in four zones covered by Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF).
A recent Government Order, issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, permitted the Corporation Commissioner to terminate the contract with the NMF on the basis of Madras High Court's order of January 2011.
Experienced contractors
Transport contractors with experience in garbage collection would be entrusted with the task of moving garbage that are not cleared by the NMF in the zones of Pulianthope, Triplicane, Kodambakkam and Adyar during the period.
Large-capacity haulage tipper trucks to clear garbage from transfer station to dump sites would be hired for Basin Bridge, Kilpauk, Nungambakkam and Saidapet zones.
The tender for hiring the vehicles is likely to be finalised shortly.
Transferring garbage
A portion of garbage from the Adyar zone collected by the civic body is being taken to the transfer station in Saidapet now.
The transfer station in Kilpauk zone is being used by the civic body for clearing garbage from the Ice House, Pulianthope and Kodambakkam zones.
The move to hire private vehicles is expected to help improve garbage collection for two months before the next local government assumes office. The civic body has 32 haulage trucks for collection of garbage and 78 lorries for removal of debris and garden garbage. A total of 105 big compactors, 110 small compactors, 30 Bobcat skid steer loaders and 10 front end loaders are also being put to use by the civic body.
