The Chennai Corporation is all set to compete with the private sector to get more children enrolled in its schools this academic year.
With a plan of introducing kindergarten classes in 100 of its schools, the civic body has been issuing applications for the past month, to ensure parents choose its schools.
“We believe the best way to increase enrolment is through the introduction of more kindergarten classes. All our classes will be Montessori-based and on a par with private schools,” a senior Corporation official said.
KG classes have been successful in schools where they have been introduced, and, at times, even salvaged ones that were having poor enrolment.
Chennai Primary School, Purasawalkam had just 48 students in the school, but introducing kindergarten sections more than doubled the strength. Twenty five schools introduced KG classes last year, taking up the strength of the KG classes in Corporation schools to more than 5,500.
A total of 100 schools have been identified in to host classes. The school principals are currently issuing applications, the official added. “The principals are saying they are getting a good response. At least 30 to 40 applications have been received in each school,” the official said
All the classes in the nearly 100 schools will be Montessori-based
