Chennai Corporation has punished an employee by stopping increment for one year for reportedly celebrating the birthday of actor Ajith on the office premises.

The Corporation Special Officer's Council, in a resolution dated July 7, 2017, has upheld the order of the Regional Deputy Commissioner punishing the employee.

K. Jayanthi, an employee in the Kodambakkam zone of the Corporation, reportedly celebrated the birthday of the actor by distributing cake during lunch break. A few of the employees had joined the celebration. One of the employees video-recorded the event and sent it to higher officials. The civic body conducted an inquiry and recommended punishment for her.

In her reply, Ms.Jayanthi admitted that she celebrated the birthday of the actor along with other colleagues at the Corporation office.

Pointing out that she had won the best employee award in 2015 from the Corporation, Ms.Jayanthi contended that the birthday celebrations did not affect her performance at work and she was discharging her duties with dedication by adhering to rules. She even mentioned the challenges she faced at workplace as a woman.

According to sources, Ms. Jayanthi would not get increment for one year, thereby losing her chance for promotion this year. She has been transferred to Alandur Zone.

When The Hindu tried to contact her, Ms.Jayanthi was not available for comment. “We have given a strict warning that such incident should not happen in future,” said a senior official, adding “such punishment will improve local administration.”
