The Greater Chennai Corporation has accelerated work on more than 2,000 infrastructure projects in various parts of the city, many of which have led to traffic congestion and bottlenecks. The local body aims to finish the work by August 30.

Work near Ganesapuram subway has led to a sudden rise in traffic diversions in north Chennai. Traffic congestion has become severe in areas such as Wall Tax Road, Mint, Pulianthope and Basin Bridge because of the traffic diversions, residents complain.

P. Murthy, a resident of Vysarpadi, said vehicles moved at a snail’s pace on most of the roads in the area. “On Tuesday, motorists took more than an hour to reach Wall Tax Road from Basin Bridge. Residents have requested the traffic police to intervene,” said Ashok Modi, a resident of Vysarpadi.

“The riding surface near Ganesapuram Subway was damaged severely during the floods. As the surface cannot be raised beyond a point because of the height of the subway, we have to demolish the surface before relaying it. The curing of concrete will be over in seven days. If we permit vehicles before the curing is done properly, the surface will get damaged again during this monsoon,” said a civic official.

Chennai Corporation officials said work has been taken up on 6,364 interior roads and stormwater drains along many stretches in Ambattur, Alandur and Valasaravakkam.

Work on at least 1,000 interior roads and 15 bus route roads will also be completed this month.
