Interior roads that have been found to be damaged in the city will be re-laid at an estimated cost of Rs.52 crore by the Chennai Corporation shortly. Identification of damaged Bus Route Roads for re-laying is under way.
The civic body has split the work of re-laying of interior roads into 63 packages covering all 10 zones. Stretches of important interior roads such as Mint Street would be re-laid before the northeast monsoon, said officials of the civic body. Only a small portion of Mint Street is categorised as bus route road.
“Mint Street was re-laid last year but service providers dug up the road and damaged it. The road also got damaged because of heavy traffic in the stretch,” said Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Mint Street.
Gradation and bitumen content for the interior roads are different from bus route roads. Most of the interior roads are re-laid using 25 mm semi dense bituminous concrete.
The bus route roads are re-laid using 40 mm bituminous concrete.
Roads such as Mint Street, Gengu Subway Road, Shenoy Nagar 1st Main Road, Harrington Road 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Avenue are part of the 13 packages with milling and re-laying of roads.
The roads have been selected based on a survey taken up by the civic body, according to Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan.
The city has a total of 16,136 roads and streets, including 394 bus route roads. The bus route roads cover a length of 309 km in the city. The total length of roads in the city is 2,772 km.
The Chennai Corporation has already re-laid 153 bus route roads and 112 interior roads under the Special Roads Programme 2010-2011, which was announced after the northeast monsoon last year.
Apart from re-laying roads, the Corporation would also instal street furniture on roads.
