The civic body will not privatise any of the 284 Corporation-run schools in the city, said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy.
At Friday’s council meet, Mr. Duraisamy said, “No school run by the Corporation will ever be handed over to private players.”
The Corporation will, however, continue to engage with private entities to improve the system of education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Corporation had earlier made an announcement about handing over the management of its schools to private entities, for a period of three years, owing to a drop in student strength.
But after repeated protests by political parties such as the CPI (M), as well as concerns raised by councillors, the plan was dropped.
The Corporation has planned to create awareness of the welfare schemes at its schools to attract more students. In 2014, the number of students in its schools had decreased from more than a lakh to 87,374.
