The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday launched a mobile app for residents to redress civic issues.
The Namma Chennai app has been developed without any private sector partnership. “Using a dashboard, corporation officials will track all aspects of the civic grievances voiced by residents. The system will assist residents during any calamity, mobilise them and send notification directly to all residents,” said an official. Any resident can take photographs of the civic issue and upload them. The issue may include potholes on roads, stormwater drains, solid waste management, stray dogs and streetlights.
Minister for Local Administration S.P. Velumani inaugurated the mobile app on Tuesday in the presence of Ministers D. Jayakumar and P. Benjamin.
“Complaints made through the app will be accessed by the officials. The new system will reduce the time required for addressing civic issues,” said Mr. Velumani.
“Residents will also be able to track complaints. Senior officials will be able to manage the public grievance redressal system with geo-tagged information and a dashboard. The mobile app can be downloaded in android mobile phone,” said an official.
Residents who have installed the app will receive information on various civic issues from the Chennai Corporation. The notification received by residents will cover a wide range of information including disaster management, property tax, public health and elections. For example, residents will receive information from officials during natural calamities. Residents may also get notification on how to make use of the welfare schemes of the Chennai Corporation.
Currently, residents can call 1913 to report grievances.
The new system will facilitate better interaction between residents and officials for grievance redressal. “We have made the app simple for use,” said an official.
The Minister also launched the website of Chennai Smart City Limited for dissemination of information on smart projects.
