The city may enjoy cool weather and scattered light rainfall for one or two more days as an impact of the trough of low pressure that lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu Coast.
On Monday, an overcast sky and light rain in several areas across the city ensured pleasant weather. The observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered 29.9 degree Celsius and 28.8 degree Celsius, two degrees below the average temperature.
Though several coastal districts recorded rainfall of over one cm, Chennai and its suburbs recorded only a trace of rainfall since Sunday night. Marakkanam recorded 3 cm and Chidambaram and Ramanathapuram received 2 cm of rainfall since Sunday night.
Officials of the met department said though it was uncommon for a trough to form in February, Chennai had experienced similar weather in the past. The trend of rainfall in February has increased in recent decades, an official said. Last year, the city received 14.3 mm of rainfall in February, higher than the monthly average of 2.2 mm.
The decade’s highest amount of rainfall in February was 88.9 mm in 2011. The increase in cloud cover would mean cooler days and warmer nights till Wednesday.
