Constables suspended in sexual assault case

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Two head constables attached to the Mambalam police station were placed under suspension following orders by the city police commissioner, S. George, on Wednsday evening.

This comes after completion of CBCID enquiry into an allegation that a 19-year-old male suspect was sexually assaulted in police custody.

According to the police, constables Sethuraman and Srinivasan of the crime wing of Mambalam police were suspended.

A CBCID team investigated the claim that a teenager was sexually abused by three unidentified men brought in by the policemen on duty. The teenager and his two aides were picked up by the police on December 10 and questioned in custody in connection with a mobile phone theft case.

In a bid to get a confession out of the youngster the constables allegedly hired people to assault the teenager.

The youth was imprisoned the following day but admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital. He had to undergo surgery following injuries to his private parts.

After media reports on the matter, the State DGP had ordered a CBCID probe.
