A commuter from Kolkata who slipped and fell from a moving train was saved by an alert railway constable at Chennai Central Station on Sunday.
B. Verma, 45, who would have been crushed to death, escaped with bruises thanks to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable K. Jayaprakash, who pulled him to safety from the running train.
Southern Railway officials said Mr. Verma, who was on a business trip to Kottayam, tried to board S-13 coach of the Trivandrum Express train (No. 12697) on platform no. 6. Even as the train gained speed, he tried to board it carrying a backpack, but slipped.
He would have fallen into the gap between the train and platform. On seeing him struggle to find his feet, the RPF constable posted at the platform and a few persons rushed to his help. In the nick of the moment, he was pulled to safety.
The passenger was given first aid and shifted to the Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital for treatment. A CCTV footage from the platform showing the constable saving the passenger went viral on social media.
