Over 500 conservancy workers held a demonstration outside the Neelankarai police station on ECR on Wednesday morning. They were demanding stern action against a police inspector who allegedly assaulted a male conservancy worker and abused a female worker.
Traffic was disrupted from 9.30 a.m. onwards on ECR after the conservancy workers attached to the Chennai Corporation raised slogans demanding action against Neelankarai Inspector Pugazhendi.
On March 18, the officer who was on duty on the convoy route of the Chief Minister, had allegedly abused worker Malleshwari. When her colleague Seenaiah questioned the officer, he reportedly assaulted him. Seenaiah suffered a hairline fracture.
Following the incident, the victims accompanied by other conservancy staff, approached the Assistant Commissioner (Neelankarai) with a complaint but no further action was taken.
On Wednesday, the group gathered outside the Neelankarai station. The agitators plan to meet the Commissioner of Police with their demand. “We have requested senior officials to prevent similar atrocities against conservancy workers,” said P. Srinivasulu, a member of a labour union of Chennai Corporation.
