Conservancy workers demand pending salary

Conservancy workers, who are on contract and belong to various zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation, staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding payment of salaries.

These are workers classified as those under non-muster roll, who were on contract previously with the municipalities that merged with the corporation and malaria workers who are under contract. S. Munusamy of Sholinganallur zone said though they opened bank accounts, as they were asked to do so, but they were yet to receive their salaries. “It is the same story every month. We work along with permanent employees but they get salaries on 31st,” he said. Murali of Valasaravakkam zone said it has been 64 days since he and others got paid.

Chennai Corporation Red Flag Union’s K. Devaraj said that a senior official of the civic body met with them and promised to give their salaries on Thursday.

P. Srinivasan of the Union, said that the workers will go on strike in on Friday, if they dont receive their salaries by Thursday evening.
