Conman who promised railway tickets held

March 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:29 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at Moore Market Complex ticket booking counters helped Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel identify a 61-year-old conman. He was later arrested.

The man, identified as Karthikeyan from Salem, used to cheat people of their money by promising to help them bypass queues and get tickets.

He had been conning people for the past three years, claimed RPF officers. “He would wear a white uniform like that of a railway employee and visit the booking counter complex every day. He used to greet all the staff,” said an RPF officer. This way, he created an impression among those waiting to book tickets that he was a Railways employee with good connections.

“He would offer help to people waiting in the queue. He will take their money and send them to take photocopies of identity cards and then flee,” added the officer.

One passenger, who was conned, lodged a complaint with the RPF at Chennai Central station.

“We kept monitoring the CCTV footage and identified the culprit when he approached a person on Saturday. Constable Ajeez and other officers nabbed him,” the officer said.

He was remanded.
