A Congress panchayat president, his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) deputy and 14 others were arrested at nearby Tiruninravur here on Sunday in connection with the murder of a rowdy, who was allegedly, fatally knocked down by them with their car.

Police said Viswanathan (Congress), Ravi (DMK) and the others were arrested over the September 16 incident when a rival gang attacked them owing to previous enmity.

The gang, headed by history sheeter Parthiban, attacked Viswanathan and Ravi for Ravi’s alleged role in his brother’s murder a few months back in connection with a dispute over winning a local government contract.

Some others travelling with the duo in different vehicles came to their rescue and retaliated and both groups attacked each other by hurling petrol bombs, police said.

Ravi and Viswanthan, travelling in the same car, tried to escape and fatally knocked down the rowdy, killing him on the spot.

Viswanathan and Ravi were arrested on information given by Parthiban, who was taken in for questioning by police, he said, adding that 14 others who were with the duo at the time were also arrested.

Cases under different sections, including murder, have been filed against them, he added.
