Nothing could be a bigger pointer to the factionalism in the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) than the Assembly election panel formed on Friday. For identifying candidates for 41 constituencies, the party has put together a team of 27 leaders.
TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan was reportedly unhappy with the development since a big team like this would delay finalising the list of candidates.
This could push the dates for the start of the election campaign. The committee formed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi consists of senior leaders including P. Chidambaram, Sudarsana Natchiappan, K.V. Thangkabalu and M. Krishnasswamy.
Sources said each of the 27 members is expected to push for seats for their loyalists.
This might upset Mr. Elangovan’s plan to allocate seats to at least 20 district presidents of the Congress.
Incidentally, Mr. Chidambaram had stayed out of the panel set up to hold talks with the DMK.
