Concrete roads to be laid in phases

March 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

The civic body told the Madras High Court on Thursday that conversion of bitumen roads into concrete roads would be taken up in a phased manner.

It expressed concern qua award of a tender as a Global Investors’ Meet is scheduled in the city on May 23 and 24. That was why the tender for relaying arterial and main roads was required to be taken up urgently.

The Corporation said concrete roads were better than tar roads as they had a longer life span and lower maintenance.

S.S. Ranganathan, joint secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, detailed the length of roads under the various local bodies in the State, and the type of roads to be laid.

The expenditure should be incurred by the municipalities or town panchayats, most of which faced financial crunch. Hence, the laying of concrete roads should be taken up only in a phased manner.

The Court Bench listed the matter for March 9.
